National Day preview

Hello guys, I have just came back from the national day preview. let me tell all of you what happened in a short newspaper article:

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, the NDP 09 Preview was just about to get started. The recent measures which included more strict security tracks did not slow down the flow of traffic. The crowd was effectively ushered to their seats quickly be the well-trained volunteers. goodie bags were given out in different colours, namely purple, dark blue, orange and yellow.

The show began with a buzz as the host, Gurmit Singh, Mark Lee, Michelle Chong, Vernetta lopez and the policeman in Police and thief, led the crowd well as they started the show on a high-note with a series of comical conversations which makes the crowd burst into laughter. This set the tone for the rest of the concert. The crowd even attempted to do a record time of the Mexican Wave. They were even faster than a Subaru rallycar, despite its fearsome speed.This set the tone for the rest of the event.

The show was split up into 10 chapters. there are different story settings for each of them They were different from previous years, which the crowd marvelled at. The kaleidoscope of colours was amazing and there was an enjoyable, humourous and amazing show. It was really nice. I would give a 5 mark for it as it has something different from the previous years. Much more fun and excitement. Great work organisers!

Favourite poet- William Shakespeare

I wil be writing an entry about my favourite poet:

My favourite poet is William Shakespeare. Well, he is well-known and famous. I fell that he is also very creative when writing his poems."

To kick off my entry, i will give you all an interesting fact about him:"Suicide occurs an unlucky thirteen times in Shakespeare's plays. It occurs in Romeo and Juliet where both Romeo and Juliet commit suicide, in Julius Caesar where both Cassius and Brutus die by consensual stabbing, as well as Brutus' wife Portia, in Othello where Othello stabs himself, in Hamlet where Ophelia is said to have "drowned" in suspicious circumstances, in Macbeth when Lady Macbeth dies, and finally in Antony and Cleopatra where suicide occurs an astounding five times (Mark Antony, Cleopatra, Charmian, Iras and Eros).

To add on, an even more interesting fact is that William's family was all illiterate.

I feel that William Shakespeare is actually a very interesting and smart person. Despite having an illiterate family, he is still able to write good plays and poems. Also, he deserves more respect as he wrote many plays and poems that went unnoticed during his time.

To end, i will tell you all a short biography of him :

William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's preeminent dramatist.He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon"

His surviving works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and several other poems. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon.

At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who bore him three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.

Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories, genres he raised to the peak of sophistication and artistry by the end of the sixteenth century. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In the twentieth century, his work was repeatedly adopted and rediscovered by new movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly popular today and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political contexts throughout the world.

I liked the poem because it is interesting and exciting. Also, the wide variety of figurative language used and the writerwrites out her emeotions very clearly to the reader. It is like a powerful poem as when the writer writes about her emotions, it seemed like i could feel what she was experiencing. Also, there is a good climax in the poem and the interesting title just wraps up why i liked the poem.

Confessions Of a Local housewife

If there was one word that can describe me, it will be KIASU and cheap-skate. Let me tell you about a usual day and you can see for yourself! A usual day will begin with a trip to the market. Down there, I will start looking for the best groceries then, I will cook up all sorts of "excuses to help in my bid to get the lowest price for the groceries. The grocer will get frustrated and give me what I want. I will grin from ear to ear on my latest coup.

Then off to the supermarket to get what I don't have. I will look at the newspaper cuttings and pick out the best offers. Saving as much money as I could. HA! Nice one! I will give a pat on my own back as I see the price I have to pay and the amount of things I get in return!

Afternoon could not come sooner and my children don the bright and smart-looking uniform. Despite a full MRT due to the afternoon lunch peak hour, I will squeeze into the train no matter what, oblivious to the commuters' anger. I didn't care, what more can I do to get on the train?

Soon, my children are off to school and off to home to cook good food for my family for dinner. Then, I saw a good offer on TV and rushed to the place so that I could get the freebies available. I will grin satisfyingly as I managed to get some freebies

I must confess that I am really cheap-skate and KIASU. With the recount of a usual day, what more can I explain?

Which part of Village By The Sea Do You Like Best?

My favourite part of Village By The Sea was the part which Hari meet his benefactors, namely Mr Panwallah and Jagu. Both were kind hearted man, which Hari should be deeply grateful for.

Jagu provides Hari with a job, a place to stay,food and even tried to help Hari on some occasions. Without the help of Jagu, surely Hari would not have been able to survive in the mean streets of Bombay.

Then, Hari meets Mr Panwallah, the old watchmaker. He teaches Hari many things, like how to adapt to the changes Thul is undergoing. Also, he teach Hari how to mend watches, which was very important in Hari's bid to survive in the new Thul with housing colonies and factories.

I will tell you why that part was my favourite. It was a turning point. Firstly, Hari finally got a job he longed for, proper food and lodging. He also learnt a new skill, vital for his future. I usually prefer turning points in stories, which are usually very interesting and sometimes touching. Also, the author describes this part very clearly, displaying flair and creativity in her writing. That's why it is no doubt my favourite part in the story.

My two older children managed to squeeze into the train - but the other two and myself were unable to make it inside. Thankfully, the older kids alighted at the next station, where we were reunited.As a result, today, I tell my children to squeeze into the train regardless of whether people are alighting or not. Perhaps SMRT can have a cabin specially reserved for pregnant woman, those with children, disabled people and old folks so that we can be assured of a seat on the train"

Here is a kiasu mother who teaches her children the wrong thing. Quoted:"I tell my children to squeeze into the train regardless of whether people are alighting or not." What KIND OF MOTHER IS SHE. The SMRT consistently telling people to give way to alighting passengers, who cannot miss their stop. The train driver always allow maximum time for passengers to enter so that there is no need to rush into the train. The first thing the mother did wrong this: Why should you squeeze into the train when it is full. Is there any harm in waiting for another one?

The second thing is that the mother metioned this :"Perhaps SMRT can have a cabin specially reserved for pregnant woman, those with children, disabled people and old folks so that we can be assured of a seat on the train"

THOSE WITH CHILDREN. THE ADULTS LIKE HER WILL GET A FREE seat. So all she wants is just a free seat for hrself and her children. SELF CENTERED woman. I could not care less about her. The worst thing is that her voiceout has been published on the newspaper. GIVE ME A BREAK MADAM!

I had many ordeals with such mothers. Let me tell you about one incident:

I was on the 67 bus on my way home. Two woman with two children each squeezed up the 67 bus despite the full load. They kept asking people to move in, thinking that there should be more space on a bendy bus. However, it was already full and they continued to push into the bus. Some people had to get off in anger. Then, they started asking their children to go look for seats. The children protested of course. They were forced to by their parents and they had to squeeze frther into the bus. On the next stop, there were 2 seats. Despit the presence of an elderly man nearby, they charged forward to get the seat, not even letting the children sit!

Everyone on the bus was giving them cold glares. Me? My blood was boiling at a 100 degrees~! WHAT KIND OF mothers are they? Not letting their children sit? Asking the children to look for a place in such a crowded bus? Setting a bad example by not giving up the seat to those in need? I had definitely no respect for both of them. I am sure there are MUCH more in Singapore. I hope that people like such housewives would just do a self reflection themselves. GET LOST!

An ordeal with street donations(Own Blog Prompt)

On Sunday, I went to Atrium @Orchard to do my CIP. I had a pretty interesting and enriching time down there. I had to stand by the road and ask for donations. Pretty fun though!

However, when I first started the 4 hour stint, my friend and I decided to slack for a while and we went to see the Singapore Idol auditions at the Cathay, back after a four-year hiatus. We found may idol hopefuls waiting for their turn for their auditions. We were happy to get a piece of the action. I will be posting up some photos soon!

That was when the problem started. Many people just shook their heads and declined politely. I took about 5 minutes to get a donation. I was shocked by the disatrous reception offered by people. So completely ignored me and just walk away. My friend was like spouting vulgarities softly, cursing everyone that declined. We then had a criteria when looking for people to donate too! First let me share with you some of the criteria my friend and I set when we look out for people to persuade them to donate any amount of money or buy our wristbands:

1) Beware of singles as they normally look very gloomy and have total no interest in what we are selling. Sometimes you have occasional singles who fork out money, but most of the time they are self-centred with their own world.

2) Families or young couples or even 14 year old youngsters are quite kind-hearted and though they may only donate just that few cents, they were the odd ones out who were more generous than the other people and the cents they donated bandaged the hurt caused by people who rejected to donate to us or just simply turn an eye away.

3) People who are carrying bulky items, engrossed in conversations, talking on the phone or walking so briskly are those who normally would not care to leave a footprint near our wristbands as they cannot take their wallet out while they are busy with something else.

During that time, many people declined. To my horror, some people even turn around to walk away , not wanting to face us while others put their hands in their pockets, pretending to fish for some coins, only to walk away! What kind of people are they? Is it so difficult to just decline politely if you do not want to donate. I am really angered by such Singaporeans actions. Why should they not donate? They should not leave the poor and needy in the lurch and just care about themselves! However, I think that there are some reasons that might have led to it too.

The recent "scam" by various charitable organisations has tarnished the "reputation" of such street sales. Also, too many street donations are happening. You can easily find 30 in CBD daily. To add to the misery,the global financial crisis has not helped in the course of the current situation. This has led to people being mor wary of such street donations.

I think the biggest problem is the "scam" by the charaitable organisations. People will doubt the credibility of charitable organisations and not donate money anymore. I think that the people who embezzle those charitable organisations' funds are too despicable. They make use of mnoney to help the needy for themselves!. The police should nail down all such culprits and deal with them severely!

Indeed, it was a really good experince for me. Not only did I learn more about such street donations, I also help the poor and needy. The only thorn in the flesh was the anger of people not donating and the causes of it which really made my blood boil.

Who is my favourite/ least favourite character in Village By The Sea?

My favourite character in the book is Biju. Although he is arrogant and regularly flaunts his wealth, he deserves my admiration for some acts which has left a deep impression on me. Firstly, despite the villagers' continued gossip about how Biju got his wealth and even calling him a smuggler, he did not lash out at them or bear any grudges against them and tolerated the agony of being laughed at. However, I must say that he is quite strict and cruel for making his workers work long hours under the hot sun. Finally, I feel that he care very much for the villagers. When the watchman mocked and despised the villagers, he stood up for his friends. His acts of kindness and tolerance overshadows his stringent attitude and I am really amazed by the great man Biju is.

My least favourite character is the Bombay 'wallahs'. They despised the villagers every now and then and thought lowly of the villagers. This was a despicable act. Have they ever put themselves in the villagers shoes? They should count themselves lucky not to be born in a village but to be born in a well-developed city.They should not go around laugh at the less fortunate. They should be helping them by volunteering to help them or donating money instead. Their cruel and evil act leaves little to be desired.

Is progress necessarily beneficial for society?

Is progress necessarily beneficial for society? Well, actually I don't think so. With reference to Village By The Sea, I will point out why I don't think that progress necessarily beneficial for society.

Firstly, the once peaceful village of Thul would be turned from a cluster of factories and housing colonies. Trees must be cut down to make way for the construction. Also, the poor must leave Thul. In comes the rich with money who will want to expand its business and build more factories. Also, in the life of luxury, wouldn't they take things for granted. As mentioned by the watchman who described about the building of the factories,the wastes of the factory can be pumped into the sea easily. The convenience would lead to the factories conveniently and effectively dumping the waste anywhere, into the sea. This would kill the fishes that the fishermen once savoured. This would lead to less fishes in the world. It will lead to many things, human beings would take all the surviving fishes, sparing no though for the penguins in antartica or any wildlife which depends on fishes for food. Wih such severe consequences, surely progress i not beneficial to society at ALL!

With the current global situation in mind, this will lead to many things. There will be definitely lesser food for people as more fishes are killed. I will now state the extreme. The villagers at Thul has experienced many famines and drought, notably during the monsoon season. The rich had such a luxurious life that famine and drought has never crossed their mind. When ime comes, there will be famines and droughts, surely the villagers would be more prepared then the rich and they are the ones who will survive.

I would say that progress might be beneficial to society in some ways but with regards to Village By The Sea, I would definitely disagree with this statement.

I rather be the city rat than the country rat

I rather be the city rat than the country rat because I feel that the city is always bustling with interesting activities unlike the tranquil and peaceful life of the country mouse. The city life hold many oppurtunities for us. We can go to school when we are young and learn many things With the knowledge in mind, there is a wide variety of jobs available and you can find a suitable job for yourselves with proper qualification. Soon, you will choose whether you want to stay single, to pursue a proper career or enjoy the freedom of staying single, or start a family. When you get older, you can finally sit back and enjoy your retirement, letting the younger generation take over the roots you left behind.Won't it be great to be a city rat?

I ncontrast, the country life is usually all about enjoying a peaceful and comfortable life. All the country rat needs to do is to farm to make a living or just sit back in his relaxing home and spend his time lazing around.

I believe that life in the city is much more meaningful and exciting as every new day provides new chances. I wouldn't want to work on a farm my whole life. I want an exciting life, a meaningful life where I can do whatever I like. Thus, I would definitely want to be the city rat.

Great end to a satisfying semester

Dear all,

Today, I got back my progress report. IT SUCKS. I had about 3 subjects which is one mark away from the next grade, notably maths which I came amazingly close to an A1. I was so pissed. I shouold have gotten lower MSGS. I think I will work harder on chinese, literature and humanities to try to get better marks. It seems really sad to see some people who are usually weaker than me catch up or overtake me. I will wro kharder next term because I had been slacking off a little this term. Hope that I will power my way down the MSG table :).

I have a list of blog prompts I have to do during the holidays so watch out for that. It will be interesting of course :) STAY TUNED TO MY BLOG

For the RTA oral assignment, I was unlucky enough to be put in a group of just 5, with some of the members notorious for not doing their jobs in project. However, I have decided to look at it as a test of my abilities to work with others instead of just critising others. I hope we will work well together and get good marks.

Now, I want to access my own character development since I entered HCI. When I first entered HCI, I was very critical of some of my classmates. I was critising them every now and then just to make them feel bad. Then, there was a turning point and I realised I had to adapt to the new school with new friends. One example is how I manage to clear misunderstandings with a particular classmate and we are now working together to come up for the script of the RTA. Although I still critical about a few students every now and then, I decided to keep it to myself and not vent my anger on them. FIRST H1N1 CASE IN SINGAPORE

The first H1N1 case has occurred in Singapore. Read this article:

Singapore confirms first H1N1 flu case
Singapore has confirmed its first case of Influenza A (H1N1), the country's Health Ministry (MOH) said today.
The patient, a 22-year-old Singaporean woman, is currently being treated at the Communicable Disease Centre at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and is in stable condition.
She was in New York from May 14 to 24 and arrived back in Singapore from New York on SQ25 on May 26 at 630am. She was seated at row 55 and developed a cough while on the flight.
The woman passed the thermal scanner at the airport as she did not have a fever then. Later that morning, she consulted a GP who decided to send her to TTSH, given her travel history.
She was immediately admitted for testing, and laboratory confirmation of her infection was made by midnight the same day.
MOH has initiated contact tracing of her close contacts. They will be quarantined and provided with antiviral treatment.
Passengers who travelled in the same flight and were seated in rows 52 to 58 are urged to call the Health Ministry hotline at 1800- 333 9999 so their health condition can be checked.
MOH has reminded all medical practitioners and healthcare institutions to continue to be vigilant to suspect cases. It will continue with temperature screening for passengers entering Singapore at all checkpoints (land, sea and air).
All passengers passing through or entering Singapore are given Health Alert Notices on board their flights, advising them to monitor their own health if they have been to affected areas and to seek medical attention immediately if they are not well.

Advice from MOH:
Singaporeans are reminded to maintain high standards of personal hygiene. This means covering the nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, and washing hands frequently with soap and water, especially after contact with respiratory secretions (e.g., after sneezing and coughing).The public is also asked to cooperate and be socially responsible. This means staying home and avoiding crowded places (including trains, buses, offices), putting on a surgical mask and seeing a doctor if you have flu symptoms. MOH advises those who travelled to affected areas to closely monitor their health and seek treatment as soon as possible should they develop symptoms.
The public is advised to exercise caution over travel to affected areas. In the event that travel is unavoidable, they are advised to take precautionary measures such as avoiding crowded areas and maintaining high standards of personal hygiene at all times. However, if you are unwell with fever and cough but have no travel history to affected areas, see a doctor and stay at home.

The value I have shown this week is resilience as I tried my best in everything I do. Now, back to my proper post. My class is going to have our 3rd english teacher soon. I don't think it is good as the teacher needs time to familiarise with us again. I hope the school will get a more consistent teacher next time. Chaotic Sports day

Dear all,

It was the combined sports meet today where some students compete in various track and field events.However, I think the seating area was too squeezy and also, the events were not able to sustain the crowd's interest. Everybody was soon playing their handphones or laptops oblivious to the various events held for the sports meet. Also, the high jump and pole vault events,which I was interested in, was too far away from me and I think I only paid attention to about 4 events. I think that the organisers should do something about it.

However, kudos to the organisers for getting the milo van and 100 plus van to the school. Also, there were snacks and drinks sold and 2 singers, creating a happy atmosphere. The competitors also showed great sportsmanship and fought hard for glory. YOU WERE GREAT!

H1N1 virus coming to singapore soon via MALAYSIA

This week, I showed joy when I received my test results. The results are not too bad. KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA on Saturday confirmed its second case of swine flu, just a day after announcing its first. 'Malaysia has a second case of the A(H1N1) influenza, which was confirmed by the Institute of Medical research this morning,' the health ministry's deputy director general Ramlee Rahmat told reporters.

'She is a student, she was on the same flight as the first case (and) she is a friend of the first case,' he added. 'She was admitted to the Penang hospital yesterday. She is in stable condition and her fever has subsided.' Mr Ramlee said the student's family had also been placed in home quarantine but were healthy. Malaysia's top health official on Friday confirmed the country's first case of swine flu amid fears that more people had been exposed to the disease. The government has urged all passengers who travelled on the same Malaysian Airlines flight as the two infected people to contact the ministry. Malaysian health authorities have installed 20 thermal scanners at the country's entry points to help detect possible cases of the virus.

After reading this article I feel that Singapore's efforts to stop the H1N1 virus from coming to Singapore might come to nought. Malaysia is so close to Singapore and the virus is spreading so quickly in Malaysia. Surely, it will be a matter of time before the virus comes to Singapore. Hello all,

I am back posting after the continous tests this week. I only have 1 more literature test next wednesday. I think all the tests are OK except for chinese maybe. The value I have shown this week is excellence when I strived to do my best in my tests. All the best too all and to myself. I hope I will get good marks.

Mas selamat was arrested in malaysia. Here is the article on the news paper:

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen months after his audacious escape from detention in Singapore, Mas Selamat Kastari has been caught in Malaysia. Singapore's most wanted terrorist was captured on April 1 while hiding in Johor, regional intelligence sources told The Straits Times.

It is believed that he was nabbed in the outskirts of Johor Baru and is now being held by the Malaysian authorities for interrogation. It is not known how he slipped out of Singapore or when he entered Malaysia. Although he was arrested six weeks ago, the Malaysian authorities have not yet announced the capture. A senior Malaysian government official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the arrest and said that Mas Selamat was being held under the country's Internal Security Act. He declined to say when the terrorist would be handed over to the Singapore authorities. It is believed that the fugitive had stayed in Johor all this time and had not travelled further north. He is also believed to be detained in Johor. Sources told The Straits Times that the 48-year-old was tracked down based on intelligence provided by Singapore's Internal Security Department (ISD), and a joint operation by Malaysia and Singapore's security agencies eventually led to his arrest. The capture of Mas Selamat brings to an end one of the largest manhunts ever undertaken by Singapore and its neighbours for a terrorist on the run.

The new outbreak of swine flu is serious. Here are some good hygiene tips:
* Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly, especially after shaking hands with someone or touching anything dirty, including doorknobs, telephones, automated teller machines, elevator buttons and anything in public restrooms. Scrub with soap and hot water for at least 30 seconds; try teaching children to sing a song while washing so they do it long enough.

* Keep disposable tissues handy and use one to cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing to prevent spreading germs. Throw out tissues immediately, and don't use handkerchiefs.

* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, because germs on your hand can infect you.

* Stay home from work, school and other activities when you are sick.

* Avoid close contact with anyone who appears ill; don't shake hands or kiss them. If caring for a sick person, wash your hands frequently and keep the area around them clean.

* Clean bathrooms, kitchens and other areas that accumulate germs as frequently as possible.

* Avoid sharing food, eating utensils, drinking glasses, pens and pencils, towels and other personal items. At the office, senior centers and day-care centers, use disposable utensils and cups.

* Don't reuse or share bottles of water.

A successful SMOPS 2009

An article again! Here it goes:

Hwa Chong Instituition held its annual Mathematics Olympiad for primary schools earlier this morning. It was a roaring success despite the huge amount of participants.

The students took a long time preparing for this event. There were many departments for the helpers to help make the event a success.

The participants registered first before heading to their respective classrooms for their competition. They sat for a twohour paper before being orderly dismissed by the student helpers.

It was indeed a flawless display by the student helpers. They hope to emulate the success next year again!

I was in the logistics department and they asked me to replace another helper who did not come. The group I had to follow took a long time to start the competition as there were many girls in the group and the toilet was already full as there were also 3 groups at the toilet. The competition began at a later time because of it. I had a hard time trying to bring the refreshments back. It was too heavy. Luckily, Sheng Xi helped me. Thanks shengxi! In the end, I was glad that the event was a success! Any comments for this event?

Don't you find these days hot. I am sweating even after a cold bath!!!! I am seriously mad. It is extremely hot and I can't even think properly. Maybe we are really feeling the effects of global warming. Haizz.... not again. I really hope more people will take measures to reduce the damage done to Earth.

Anyway, back to my proper post. Today, I would like to post about one of my most practical dreams. Some of you might find it amazing while some of you might find it amusing. It is - to participate in the amazing race asia. In singapore, we are taught a least 2 language, english and chinese. This will be a great advantage for the race as I can communicate more easily. I think that it will be very fun and exciting. I really hope to be a part of the game oneday. It may seem like a distant dream but all I can do is wish.........

Our class did not need to go and cheer for the track anf fields finals. That is a sad thing. The stadium where it is held is just 5 mins from my house~!!! I was really wondering why they only got 9 classes. The stadium could fill about more than 5000( from my experience there, watching s-league matches for fun...)! I was really sad that our class was not going.

Dear all,

Last Friday, being a nosey parker, I went to the computer at 4 plus after my cca (my cca ended early because the seniors had to prepare for syf next wednesday) just to check out those people who haven't finish the IS project. I was shocked to find the computer lab with many people !!!! Haizzz... I could only sigh... "good luck to them,"I thought to myself.

Next wednesday, My CCa is going to SYF. Good luck to them!

Ok, now I will just vent my anger at something:

OH GREAT!!! F1 FEVER IS GOING WAY DOWN!!! it is so boring, seeing the same racers dominating the qualifying and the race. I think that the sport popularity will go down in a matter of months. It is seriously boring. The crucial decision of the illegal diffusers last weekend has turned the sport on its head. Now, just sit back and enjoy the boring race. Sigh.....

The value I have shown most this week is resilience. I strived for excellence too as I finished my IS project. I had my lang arts test today. It was OK for me, not too easy not too difficult. What did you all think of the test.

The recent case of food poisoning has spark off a hot debate. Many people start to talk about the hygiene in the hawker centres. In the newspaper, experts talk about what to look out for in a stall before you buy your food. Also, people talk about the unforunate death of 2 people and a miscarraige after the food poisoning case at the rojak stall in the Geylang Serai Market. Here are some things you may want to think about. Post your comment about it!

Project prelims

Today, we had our project work prelims. My group was doing category 1, Experimental research. We were prsenting at the LT @ SRC and our group was first! 1-01! We had 27 slides and we did not even think we could finish presenting. Our group took a long time to start as the judges have to brief us and the was a boy(you know who) who was calling his friends but talked too loudly. The judge had to scream at him so thjat he would keep quiet. Now for our presentation..

We took 4.22 mintues( my friend's stopwatch) for our presentation. I was suprised that we were able to finish within the time limit. Also, the judges only asked 1 question! We were relieved when the presentation was over. However, we finished presenting at 8.12am! We had to listen to the other presetation for 5 straight hours!

Some of the groups' presentation were interesting while others did not make sense. At about 10 plus, most of the groups were bored. Some of them played their laptops outside while others played their handphones. At 11 plus, a number of students sneaked home. My group only went outside to play our handphones for about 20 mins before going back in. I was overjoyed when it was over.I really hope our group will be able to go through.

What Should The Government Do So That People Will Take Public Transport

Let's put it this way.

What thoughts cross your mind when you see a person owning a car. What is your first impression?

HE IS RICH OF COURSE!!!

So, a typical singaporean mindset will be that you are rich if you own a car and you are "poor" when you take the public transport.Basically, owning a car shows your financial status. That's why more Singaporeans decide to buy a car so that they wouldn't look poor.

The first thing the government should do is: Change The mindset of singaporeans.
By changing the mindset of singaporeans, they would start to take public transport and not buy a car anymore

The second thing the government should do: They should increase more bus trips and train trips. This will make taking public transport more attractive as people can get to their destination faster.

The third thing they should do: THEY ALSO HAVE TO TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT! Have you ever seen an mp or government officials taking the public transport? I believe that their mindsetis the same as a typical singaporean. I think that these people do not want Singaporeans to think lowly of them. They should lead by example. If they themselves do not change their mindset, do you think singaporeans will change?

This are some solutions. I hope you have enjoyed reading it.

The value I have shown most this week is teamwork. With the project work module just around the corner, my group and I have to show teamwork to be able to fish our project. Boy am I glad to see our project done!

Today, I also had my 2.4 km run. In the first 4 rounds, I was trying to catch up and beat Joel but he was too fast. It was unbelievable! Joel was actually one of the slowest in practice. I ran out of steam and walked very slowly in round 5. I managed to muster some energy in round 6 to complete my run. However, by the time, a lot of people have overtaken me. Joel finished 11 in the end. I only managed a 28. Right in front of me was Xuan Meng. Many people said that he cheated a lap. I think that he did not cheat. I did not lap him at all. He was right behind all along. Usually in practice, he will finish right in front of me so I was quite sure he did not cheat.

Anyway, kudos to Joel for his determination shown in the run today. For all those people who cheat but got away, I just wish to say that cheating takes you nowhere. You will feel guilty instead of being happy that you have run 1 round less. The sense of guilt will be in your mind.

The 1A4 times

Dear all blog readers,

I am going to write some articles for "the 1A4 times". Today, I am going to write the first article for the "newspaper":

Earlier in afternoon, Class 1A4 kickstarted its "Readers For Life" programme. They had their first Book Presentation where Miss Gordon and Alvin gave talks on their favourite books.

The students listened attentively to each of the talks and asked some good questions about the book. The students were very enthusiastic in this book presentaion. This is a good sign.

The program was intiated by the Language Arts Department. Language arts had been identified as one of the weak point among Hwa Chong students. During the last school holidays in December, teachers came together and came up with this program. This program will encourage students to read as reading will build up the students' vocabulary and grammer.

The parents play a big role in this program. They will be encouraging their sons to read at home and the teachers will provide modeling, books, various other reading materials and motivation.

There will be many activities organised for this program. Students will read books and post their book reviews or fill up their bookshelves on Weread.com. There will also be a mid-year book sale in the school.

This program has taken up a lot of time in preparing and discussing in designing the program for the students. Hopefully, this program will be a success!

Dear all,

My blog completed its recovery from an error in the code. I was not able to restore the old skin so I decided to change the blogskin. Do you like it? Please share your views on my blogskin on the tagboard or leave a comment. I will appreciate if you leave some comments when you come!

This week, I shown resilience when I was tryong to restore my blogskin. Despite countless setbacks, I managed to solve the problem after a long time.

I am going to post about the Project Work Module . The prelims are coming up in a few weeks' time.

I had my NAPFA test today. I passed all the stations luckily and did not have to do a re-test. I had a sprain on my thigh in the morning. You can ask Ke Xuan. I even had to hold onto the support as I was climbing up the stairs. It was really painful. In the second station, the shuttle run, I failed in my first try but I passed my second try. It was really painful throughout the whole NAPFA test. I was so glad when the NAPFA test was over and I was able to pass it without much difficulty. My thigh still hurts now but it is better already.

During the project training by Mr ho, he gave us an interesting talk on how to apply Future Problem Solving in our project work. It was quite boring but the sharp pain in my thigh kept me awake and I had no choice but to listen attentively to the speaker.

I will be trying to write an article on the earth hour, here it goes:

Singapore observed Earth Hour yesterday at about 8.30pm sharp. Various organisations and many people took part in the event and switched off their lights for about an hour.

Earth Hour is a global initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature to raise awareness of climate change. It is the second year that Earth Hour is being observed in Singapore.

The Fullerton Hotel dimmed its lights at 8.30pm sharp, while over at Raffles Place, the majestic lights outlining the Maybank building were also switched off. Even the Singapore Flyer took part in observing the Earth Hour .

Nearby at orchard, shopping centres also played their part and joined others in switching off their lights.

At the Esplanade Park, more than 400 people gathered for a picnic. People there explained that they were there to support the Earth Hour. Some said that they wanted to have fun.

Singapore joined many countries in the Earth Hour this year. An estimated 83 countries took part in the event.

I feel that the Earth Hour was a massive success. There were many interesting events organised like the picnic at the Esplanade Park. I hope that people will learn from this experience. Save the Earth! Anyway, kudos to the organised for a successfull and brillian Earth Hour Campaign.

TOMORROW IS FOUNDERS DAY

Dear guys,

The value I have shown most this week is excellence. The project work module preliminary round is just around the corner. I believe all of you must be constantly improving on your respective projects to ensure progress to the next round.

I showed excellence as I strived for continual improvement for my project. My group met up regularly this week with our mentor. We are about 90% ready for the prelims. I really hope we can progress to the next round.

Tomorrow is founder's day. It will be a half day. Yipeee!

Now, I am going to talk about my holiday.

On monday and tuesday, I went to science centre with my friend and did CIP there for 5 hours each day. I think that the Science Centre CIP is the best! I get $7 macdonald's coupons for lunch and all I needed to do was to set up a booth. There were also some Betty Secondary( not sure of the spelling) students there.They were quite friendly and they helped us as they had been there before and we went there for only the first time. My booth was the colouring booth. As it was the school holidays, a lot of parents brought their children to the science centre. The booth received overwhelming response as it was a favourite activity kids like. We needed to set up 4 tables and able 10 stools. My friend and I was kept busy by the little kids. It was a fun and enriching experience.

On Wednesday, I spent my day watching some DVDs I bought and I did my homework. By thursday afternoon, I have completed my homework and I spent the rest of the day at my friend's house to furnish up my powerpoint. On friday, I went to MHA for the SG Journalist Club meeting. There were a lot of river valley secondary students there. Mr Lam wai kit gave us a interesting talk on the types of stories and how to ask questions during a press conference. We even had a mock press conference. There were many fun activities planned for us too for the rest of the day. I think it was very fun and entertaining and also very useful.

I think I spent my holidays well. I set aside some time for revising and completing my work. Also, I managed to find time to do some CIP and even time to go for the 'workshop'. I also managed to complete the powerpoint for the prelims. My group and I are in the process of finalising what we are going to present for the prelims. I hope I will spent my tim wisely in the June holidays too. Actually, I have already planned to go to my primary school's p5 camp and go to the Science centre again to get some more CIP during the June holidays!

Camp and values

Dear blog readers,

I went for my Sec 1 Camp last week at Sarimbun campsite from wednesday to friday. I had to sleep in a-huts. It is at least better than sleeping in tents. During the first lunch, everybody was very angry. The trainers made us cheer like crazy. We thought that we can have our food after we had cheered enough. However, we realised that the trainer was just killing time as the food has not arrived. Everyone jeered at them....

We had some fun fitness games and rafting. The rafting was quite fun. Everybody were quarrelling over who to row the boat. In the end, sze chuan, jun yang and another ispark guy were rowing the boat. Jun yang kept splashing water at sze chuan. Everybody was laughing. It was hilarious!

Before bedtime, we were instructed to be at the white tentage at 6.50pm sharp.

During bedtime, we had to lay our sleeping bags on the wooden floor. It was not long before everybody fell asleep as we had a tiring day.

Either Jun Yang or David was snoring as a few of us heard someone snoring and the sound was coming from the top.

I saw a lizard crawl on (i think) ke xuan's sleeping bag. It was amazing that ke xuan was sleeping so soundly that he did not realise it. Matthias woke up so many times and he kept calling out to me. I woke up at least 8 times( 2 times per hour!). My watch chimed at 6pm. I woke up and started to pack my bag. I glanced at my watch again."6.10" I decided to lie down awhile to get a little more rest.I didnt realise it was already time to wake up.

I woke up at 6.30pm but no one was awake. Knowing that we will be late, I quickly switched on the lights and ran to the toilet to brush my teeth and get ready my daypack for the day.

In the second day, we had the sarimbun challenge. There were many obstacles to overcome but I am glad that we accomplished our tasks. In the afternoon, we had the backwoods man cooking activity.

We were going for the Milo Pond when it started raining cats and dogs. The camp chief immediately requested all students to stay indoors.Everybody was disappointed as we could not go for the milo pond. I played reversi with my friends to pass time.

We had our campfire at night. For the performance, my group just mumbled as we did not know what to sing. I guess we did not prepare well for the performance. I think that the campfire was very poorly organised as they did not organise more things like games during the campfire. Also, the choice of the location was poor. The space was too small!

Overall, I thought the camp was quite fun as there were many activities for us. The catapult activity was the best. It was very well organised. It bonds us closer as we worked together to make the catapult. Also, the place for us to sleep was very suitable. Although it was not comfortable, I think it is a good experience as it trains us by letting us get a feel of sleeping away from comfort. I think that there should not be preferential treatmnt given to the ispark students. They should not have the whole olave hall to themselves and they did not have to sleep in a-huts or tents!

Our trainer, Jason, was the best trainer. He was funny and did not scold us at all .He was also kind and caring. We could also talk to him about football! Cheers to Jason on a job well done!

I think that the camp has room for improvement. More healthy food should be served and there should be more rice and drinks for the students. Also, more activities should be organised instead of cheering and wasting time. The campfire is one area the organisers should work on to improve it. Overall, it is a job well done for the organisers. They have made it an enjoyable camp for us and definitely an unforgettable experience.

The values I have shown this week are teamwork and respect.

During the camp, I showed teamwork. My group and I worked together as a team to overcome all obstacles. For example, the catapult activity. We had to work together to tie the knots and piece all the wood together. Teamwork means that you work together as a team and sacrifice individual identity, just like the spartans. Every thing that is done is not for yourself, it is for everyone and the city state of sparta. Without teamwork, they would be unable to fend off enemies and they would not have been able the hold off the mighty persians. Here's a video of the power of teamwork. Enjoy!

During the camp, I also showed respect. I respected my peers and trainers by giving a listening ear to them. You can show respect to your teachers by bowing to them everytime you see them. Also, you should not ignore them whent they talk to you. You should not talk back to them too. You can also show respect to your peers by giving them a listening ear and not ignore them.

Long time no post

Dear readers of my blog,

Today, I went to the IT show at suntec city to look for 1 more desktop computer to add to the 3 I have at home. It was very crowded and everybody had trouble getting from one place to another.

We managed to buy a desktop computer and a laser printer for a resonable price and the salesman helped us to put our purchases into trolleys.

There were many computers and other electronic devices which were very cheap. During the final hours, the salespeople were desperate to clear their stock. One laptop even went down from $2800 to just $1200. The price went down about 60%!Cool!

Then I met a crazy man. I accidentally bumped into him but I made very minimal contact.I apologised immediately. Then, guess what did he reply. " Sorry no cure, you almost knock me down you know!" I am so shocked. I am very sure I did not bumped into him to the extent that I knocked him down. My sister and I just apologise profusely. He then went to my parents and said that I purposely banged hard into him and almost knock him down. Of course, my parents had seen the incident so they were very sure I did nothing wrong. He went to me and scolded me too for being so careless. He kept saying the same thing," you almost knocked me down!" I was so pissed off and my sister just screamed," F*** I have no time for your bl**dy business!"

He was shocked too. He was very angry of course and he threatened to report this incident. Then my sister could not contain her anger anymore and shouted back, " you damn old man, report for all you like and I wouldn't give a damn. You can waste ur time pursue this trivial matter!" We then walked away.

I think that the man is very fussy. I did not bump that hard into him at all. An woman who had seen this matter also shook her head and told us," ignore him!"

This man is crazy and petty.Please give comments on the tagboard.

Today, I have shown resilience in my actions.

During Infocomm studies period, i had a problem on the computer as whatever i saved did not came out as what i wanted. Despite the setback, I continued to try hard and finally managed to solve the problem. Thus, I believe that resilience is an important value everyone should have as it will definitely come in handy in our daily lives. When we are faced with setbacks, we should never give up but instead be motivated to work harder to overcome all difficulties that come in our way.

Reflections On socratic seminar.

Today, we had our socratic seminar.It went on pretty well. Miss Gordon then asked us to write about what was the real lamb that get slaughtered in the story.

I think that Mrs maloney and her child are the real lamb that get slaughtered in the story.Mr maloney was way too heartless. Knowing fully well that her wife was going to give birth, he left her to go with another women. He was even insensitive to Mrs Maloney after his request for a divorce. In anger, Mrs maloney had enough and smacked him to death. Mrs maloney have committed a crime of passsion, Mr Maloney deserved it.

He left Mrs Maloney when she was pregnant. Mrs maloney has to give birth to her child and work hard to support herself and her child. This would be very tough for her. Mrs maloney will lead a very tough life. Also, the child may be deprived of father's love and the child may feeel left alone as Mrs Maloney may be busy working, leaving the child alone. This will lead to many problems such as a loss of interest in studying and depression, thus i think that Mrs maloney and her child are the real"lamb" in the story. What a heartless man!

Sorry all loyal blog readers. I only had time to post on my personal blog because i was mugging for my test. Will post more after tommorrow. As usual, i ate my lunch and went home at 2pm. I waited for the bus for half and hour and guess which bus came, a SHORT BUS WT*? The bus stank and was very crowded cause it was raining. Once again i would like to get the message across to the transport authorities. These days, bus 67 only has short bus. In the morning too, 10-15 mins 1 SHORT BUS!!!@@@@ In the afternoon, 30mins, one short bus/ two short bus/ lucky 1 long bus. This system is stupid. What a dumb service they provide. I not been riding on the bus service 67 today and friday in the morning because of the bullshit service. In the morning, all the other buses with schol going children are all long buses. However, all the 67 are short bus and worst of all they come at 10-15 mins interval. What kind of bullshit service is this??Everytime, the bus will be full by the third bus stop. I really pity the rest as they have to wait longer for another bus. I am now being sacarstic. Hey transport minister(raymond lim isnt it?), if you read my post, it will be better. Do you expect people to take public transport when smrt or sbs provide such bullshit services??? This is a (Scam) like my friends say. Do you think that people will take public transport with such lousy services? Please take into consideration about this issue.... -.-"

I am now going to talk about my newspaper article. It is entitled, "Nuisance Callers Dial Up A 999 Long Jam" I am sure many of you have read this article beacuse you might have came across it while searching for the macdonald's coupons(haha! :( i didn't get it).

The article is probably a character-driven story as the events arises from the characters. This article talks about a day in work for Staff Sergeant Norlaila Yunos.
She has been tasked to pick up emergency calls. I think that it is a great caption the give and also they put a comic strip there which was very interesting. It showed the 3 types of prank calls while a man who have encountered a robbery desperately trying to get on the lin but to no avail.

It the article, almost 90% of the calls were unimportant calls. This numbers are very suprising. I am suprised that so many people have misused the hotline. Some examples of nuisance calls are asking for telephone numbers of places or calling because his neighbour had scolded him(WHAT???).

I think that such pranksters are very ignorant and selfish. When they make prank calls, they hog the line and the emergency callers are unable to get through. This will result in an incident happening or a criminal getting away. I find such behavior extremely selfish. This is simply absurd. I hope to get this message out to prank callers, " Please stop making prank calls or unnessecary calls. This is childish and selfish behaviour!"

Hi all,

Gingerbreadman is back again, talking his bread out.:) Today, I went for my cca. I came home at 5pm.:)During school,I "listened attentively" again. I didnt understand much about the maths concept,going to ask miss tong soon. Miss Gordon wasnt here today, 2 days in a row and shenghua too( get well soon!!!). As usual, I played table tennis in my free time! But i suck at it, just playing for fun. For this week i am going to talk about the new mrt lines. I think that it is a good idea to increase the mrt lines to reach out to more places. They should come up with a plan to make sure the trains come regularly. Also, they should make the public transport more eco-friendly. This is a great idea to encourage people to switch to public transport. But they are still lacking of one thing, the government encourages us to take transport. Let's think about it from the perspective a car driver. Why do i get a car? It shows people about my financial status(don't you think?) Taking public transfort means your income is low. So you are considered as low class. But have you ever wondered from the perspective from the familiar mps? They must have thought the same too! Do you see them on the mrt? NO! So the government are expecting people to switch to public transport and they are not taking action themselves? Basically, this is the mindset of most singaporeans. Dear mps, take action now and and you will be rewarded. I am sure people will start to change their mindset if they see you travelling on the mrt despite your financial status(dont you think?). Take action immediately .Increasing the cost of maintaining a car is not the way, it will instead make people more determined to own a car.Do you think? Share your opinions on the tagboard!

Moving away from the topic, i will like to give a shoutout to the bus drivers and the smrt bus company. I take bus 67 to school in about 80% of the school days. However, the bus comes at 10 mins intervals. Adding to my annoyance, IT WAS A SHORT BUS!!!!! The bus will be extremely full. passengers are made to squeeze and making the ride unpleasant. I have noticed the 190 bus. In every 3 190 buses, 1 67 will come. As you know, the 190 caters to the famous school,"raffles girls secondary". Don't you get angry when you see preferential treatment to them? Also, on my return trip, my friends will all get on their bus and i have to wait for the 67 bus alone. Also, to my annoyance, it was a short bus again. One example is the time between 3.30pm and 4pm, only one short bus will appear. The bus will be packed like sardines and i could hardly get an inch of space!!!!I would like to ask the bus company to increase its frequency please! And please dont come out so many short bus! I normally don't take any public transports because i will take my father's car but this are the few things i have experienced these weeks. Those passengers taking 67 may well agree with me.

Today, I saw $$$$. I went to dbs bank to desposit my angpow money. Guess how much I got?.... I had___( should i tell you?). My teacher mentor for the project work module told me to do a proposal for her. Did your teachers ask you too? Anyway, I would like to have my chat on the tagboard. Let it all out! I know a lot of things about sports, songs, psp, and nintendo ds. Do share a few things. Guess what I did for the last 2 days? I went to my aunt's bungalow. It was HUGE and the design was MAGNIFICENT!!! I broke 2 vases went playing soccer with my cousin and we broke many more. But we hid all the broken vases and ran away HEHE! We played blackjack and daidee. I won 100+ bucks YIPEEE!! I actually won one of my cousin's entire angpow money! He cried of course so i gave him an empty angpow and told him to open it when he go home(actually i lied to him i told him there was $100 but it was empty , shh he dont know! HAHAHAHHHAHAHA).Then, we played taboo and boggle. I lost obviously but luckily, no $ was involved. We started playing wii and other gadgets. I accidentally smacked my cousin penis(sorry for NC16) when playing wii, I was too engrossed maybe! The next day, i went to my maternal grandparents' place. As usual we played poker and i won! But today, it was my turn to get smacked in the penis. I was hit by my cousin. OUCH@@@@@ We played poker as usual and i won some$$ again. But i cheated SHHHH! Then, we happily watch tv and went home dead-beat! Today, i only done my homework and prepared my spartans powerpoint. Isnt it a waste of time?I missed chinese new year. Hope it will come again soon! Happy New Year to all once again.

These days, there are more computer games and these games are becoming addictive. The recent games,Fifa 09, Formula One Racing and etc. are becoming more popular these days. Personally, it looks like these games are fun, but do you know that playing games can kill brain cells?

These games amay be quite educational. For Fifa 09, you can learn how to manage you own clubs and build your club's finances and etc. There are many things to learn. Well, maybe Formula One Racing might not help in your studies, although i adore the game. In formula one racing, the commentator or your team just go ," INTO THE PITS!" or "HAMILTON IS RIGHT AT YOUR GEAR BOX!". In Fifa 09, the only few things the commentator would say is ," WHAT A GOAL!" etc. So basically, games are just mainly for playing, they are not educational.

From my personal experiences, i have put some of my game's knowledge to use. In formula one racing, i learnt some camera shots that we will be learning in RTA arts of persuasion.In Fifa 09,...( I don't remember learning any thing) IMAO -.-".

But i do feel that games are not educational at all, maybe you may learn a thing or two but other than that , you don't learn anytmodern day games are not as educational as they need to be.

In this video clip, we realise that the blue fin tuna population has been diminishing as a result of overfishing. The Blue Fin Tuna is considered the diamond of the sea. This has led to concerns that the blue fin tuna's population might be extinct if this continues, as the Blue Fin Tuna are being caugh faster than the young ones could replace them. Now, fish farms have started to breed the fish. To breed Blue Fin Tuna, it requires ideal conditions and the latest technology. Breeding the fish from roe has a 5 to 10 succes rate while breeding it from fry yields a 30 to 40 percent success rate. In the video clip, they also mentioned that there is a higher demand for the Blue Fin Tuna as a result of it

I feel that we should not overfish Blue Fin Tuna. It will cause its population to be extinct and we have no more such tuna to eat.Itshould not follow in the"footsteps" of the dodo birds. We should instead look for other alternatives, like eating other fishes. Also, we should not pollute the water as it may also cause these wonderful fishes to die. So what are you waiting for, SAVE THESE FISHES NOW!!!!!

Dear bloggie,
Kwok Kam was late today. Most people (including me!) were asking him why he was late. His reply was _______( find it out yourself!)We needed to read "Lamb To Slaughter" to complete the RTA assignment. School was GREAT as usual ! I waited for 15minutes or more as usual for bus 67, only to find it full. However, my friends squeezed up the bus but I decided to wait for the next one. To my surprise, another bus came along and was EMPTY! Soon my bus overtook my friends' bus! HAHA so much for being kiasu (sorry I used singlish!). My mom made me pack my toys(boy am I lame?) so that she could donate the toys away. I had to give away my pokemon I played when I was young and those funny stickmens which i thought it was a little mad skinny man when I was young. At night, my friends started calling me and asking, "CALEB! When are you going back to south view har(sic, did I use it appropriately?)?" And I was so (pissed off) by my friends' incessant calls. Finally to make a long night story short, I went to sleep (har har )!Anyway, time for bed all! See you all tomorrow !
